Funky French

After my last black and green flakies manicure (which was every bit as involved to remove as you'd think) I was craving something pale and clean. Inspired by K2K's gold tip french I decided to try my own renditition, which is a bit less subtle.

This is OPI creme of crete (three coats) as the base with China Glaze 2030 tips freehanded over the top. I usually use creme of crete for french tips and I'm not sure what possessed me to use it as a full manicure. It's very runny and streaky and my planned sheer base fell by the wayside because it's impossible to get it to level while keeping it sheer. Nevertheless I quite like the effect, unintended though it is, and it's also covering my first go at a teabag patch (on my middle finger).

I've only ever freehanded french tips - what do you do? Any suggestions for good stencils?

Try using scotch-tape. Some, like the blogger at Chloe's Nails are ridiculously good at it. But Scotch Tape is probably cheaper >..>

My nails are typically relatively short, so freehanding is tough without an overhang to follow, and the straight line of scotch tape looks weird on them. SO, those stick-on French guides are they way to go for me. They're cheap and idiot-proof. Perfect for a cheap idiot like me. :-)

That looks really great! I will sometimes use those reinforcing stickers for three hole punched papers as a French mani guide. I cut the circle in half and lay the top edge over the bottom of edge of where I want the french tip to be and then polish over them.

OOO! That's nice. I'm getting my nails done this Friday for the first time and I'm excited! I love your blog, no lie! What I do is use my burgundy frost polish and paint it over my nail. Then, with a clear sparkle polish, and paint it over so it would look like a french tip. I should show it to you!
I will follow, please stop by mine:)))

I usually free hand- the tip guides always end up crooked on me, and the straight line of scotch tape looks odd to me. I love to do unconventional french tips- I particularly like using dark green or black for tips. I am going to try gold next- this is lovely!

This is so lovely and lady-like. I just saw a handbag on QVC by Tignanello. It was white leather on the bottom and silver leather on the top. Reminded me of your nails. Loved the bag and your nails. I've only done Funky French tips twice and I used a stencil. My nails are never long enough to do this type of manicure. Bah!

Thanks for all the tips, ladies! (No pun intended). I will be trying scotch tape in the near future...
