I grew up in the Netherlands, so naturally I've been pretty excited about the OPI Holland collection for spring. However, I only ended up getting two of the polishes - the rest weren't really up my alley. Despite that, I'm still proud of how the collection looks as a colour story! I think it captures Holland pretty nicely! I'm just sad there wasn't much for me personally...
And even this pick didn't work out - I was so excited about it as I love neutrals and am an art geek. I give you the disappointment that is...OPI Did You 'ear About Van Gogh?
Neutral, grey-ish, putty shade. Totally my thing, right? Wrong. This picture is actually a flattering version of what it looks like in reality. In some lights, it looks like the above photo and doesn't clash horribly with my skin tone. However, in most lights, it looks horrible. It has kind of a greenish/yellowish cast which really really does not suit my pale pale pale (oh so pale) yellow skin. Even though I don't own it anymore (as it looks like death on me), I am highly suspicious that this polish is incredibly close to, or perhaps a dupe for Essie Sand Tropez. Can anyone confirm?
Sigh. Pretty disappointed. Never fear, the next post of mine will show you the one polish from OPI Holland that I will keep, love and treasure forever!

I hate it when we buy a color and then it doesn't suit our skin tone. Also, I was completely stoked about the collection until I saw it in person. It didn't really look original and was just very meh to me. I thought about picking this one up, but after seeing your swatch I'm glad I passed on it.
ReplyDeletePretty color!!
ReplyDeleteBTW I tagged you for the '11 Questions Tag'. If you would like to pick it up, you can do it here:

I ♥ your blog!
Oh nooo :( Sorry your disappointed! I quite like it! You've applied it very well if thats any consolation ! Jen xx

Hmm, this was on my list, but I already have Sand Tropez (and a back up). I'm not sure if it suits me or not, but I love it. It's an exact match for my favorite handbag.
ReplyDeleteSo maybe I don't need this after all...
I have quite a few polishes like this. I doubt that I'd buy this. I wouldn't think of this polish with the name of Van Gogh. I haven't really seen any swatches of this collection. There's quite a few collections that I haven't seen. I must be reading the wrong blogs.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I had my eye set on this one, but as I have the same yellow undertones as you do, I now wonder if I will give it a try. Anyways, the collection hasn't come out here yet so I still have a couple of days/weeks to think about it.
ReplyDeleteI have Sand Tropez and it does look similar, although ST seems a bit lighter and more gray; hard to tell since I haven't seen DYEAVG yet.
Sad you didn't like this one. I am wondering how it'll look on me as I tend to have yellow undertones as well.
ReplyDelete@The Lacquered Lady - I'm so with you - was super excited by the collection, but nothing really in it for me!
ReplyDelete@KimsKie - Thank you and OMG you used to be a Gabber?@?!?! Amazzzinnnngg!! I so remember that whole thing in the 90s - gabber music was so cool. Hey, it still kind of is. I remember trying to explain to my American friends that gabbers were not skinheads.... I love you for sharing that fact!
@Jenifer - Ahhh its OK I'm sure it looks amazing on other people!! The application on this one was nice. Really nice formula.
@Grace - I really do think its a dupe or super close to ST. I saw it on someone's blog after I posted this.....now if only I can remember where.
@Lucy - Yes, you would hope a Van Gogh polish would be more special or colourful! There are lots of swatches of this whole collection out there. I'm sure it would be easy to google!
@greeneyespinknails - I would still give it a shot! I would normally think it would work as a nude on me because I suit more yellowy things, but it somehow doesn't work. I think its down to my paleness and not so much my yellowness.
@Deborah - see what I said above to Ms. Green! I think if you're darker than me (which most people are) it could look v nice with yellow undertones!
k2k
I'm a sucker for these greyish taupes. I saw the Holland collection in store the other day and this was the only one I nearly reached for. I ended up passing, but since I do already have Sand Tropez, that might be a good thing! They would seem to be rather similar; if I find a side by side comparison anywhere, I'll pass it on to you.
ReplyDeleteVery nice, I am of Dutch descent & so am also very excited about this collection, how pretty this one looks!~
ReplyDelete@Kitty - JUST realized that it's actually Playa del Platinum that I love and have a back up of (which was the rumored dupe of OPI Skull and Glossbones), not Sand Tropez... Mixing up my Essie beigey neutrals... and I call myself a polish addict. Shameful!
ReplyDeleteGrace - PDP and skull and glossbones are really close, but sadly I don't have these two to compare:

Hi! I found a blog post comparing DYEAVG and Sand Tropez:
