Let me preface this by saying I don't like "flakies". I even hate the word "flakies". Why don't we just call them flakes? At least that is a legitimate word in the dictionary. Ugh. /end rant
I didn't like Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure, and this is the same type of flake, so there is no reason why I should like this one. I was having a crap day, and I thought this pretty Essie would perk me up - I have to admit, it's super pretty in the bottle!! The problem I have with these is that this particular kind of flake turns very orange over any dark base. (I know there are different kinds of flakes that are different colours, just not this particular breed.) Some people like that, but it's not for me. So I wanted to try it over something light to see if I could get it to look less orange, and here is the result!
Essie Shine of the Times over OPI Matched Luggage (my previous mani).
Still leaning orange, but I like the effect of the flake over a light colour better than I do over dark! It looks much more complex and nicely opal-like. Not sure if I like it on ME though. I am just not used to this kind of thing I guess! Maybe I'll try it on something a bit warmer next time?
What do you think? Flakes over dark or light colours for you?

I am with you...I dislike this flake polish, and don't understand its hype either. Because it goes orange-green...I think it looks strange and unnatural and gross over many colors. Some colors would go great with an orange flake, and some with a green. A lot of colors can't really do justice to both -.-
I love it, especially on your old mani! I'm a flakie (sorry) fan all the way; it's not as loud and obnoxious as glitter, but still adds something to your mani.
Maybe you should try and mattify it and you'd like it better?
I think it looks really pretty on you! I've worn this over Marshmallow and OPI Warm & Fozzie, so far, and I liked both of those combos. The only thing is, it's pretty thick, and over Marshmallow (which requires three coats on it's own), it starts to look a little chunky.
I think I might try it over Meet Me At Sunset, or Roll in the Hague, when I get around to wearing them.
I agree with Mnemo, I like how the flakes are not as in your face as glitter can be sometimes & the clean up is great also. I actually have this exact bottle from Essie & I love putting it on both light & dark. My favorite dark to put it on is a deep navy blue, as it just reflects really well with the orange tones on the blue, I used it on Wet n Wild "Blue Moon". And my favorite light to put it on is a light shimmery pink, like ZOYA "emme" as it makes it look sorta coral, very nice for spring! I hated it on red & green. I guess you just have to find the right colors to compliment & make the orange look more appealing.
I think it's prettiest over pale too.
I can't stand this color over black and dark colors. It's so ugly. I do like it a lot more over light colors, especially purples and blues. But overall, I really don't like it nearly as much as I had hoped (after searching for it for a month!)
I love the subtle look of flake glitter (I had to stop myself from writing "flakies" just then- I never really noticed how silly it sounds until you drew my attention to it) over top of a neutral lacquer. So beautifully opal-like. That said, I also really like flakes over medium tone colours, like green, purple, blue, etc. I think this looks great on you here!
I found once I had a few flakies, seemed I had all the color ways you could go with them. It's a matter of how it's cut or shred or milled after that. I do like it over a chunky glitter which I have never been into. I find I tire of whatever I put a flakie topper over. But you are right - I also found I like most of them much better over lighter shades. But if I am going for that 'turn' in effect - I will pick up my Essie Kisses or Bisses which gives a great iridescent shimmer only more to a base. I am more into things like what K &B does and the CND Effects. They are more original to me.
I like it over China Glaze's For Audrey... it ends up looking more pastel than it does over darker colors.
this is very pretty!!

I think this combo is lovely on you! I'm not much of a flake fan myself, either.
I like it over dark purples. You should also check out As Gold As It Gets. It's my preferred out of the two, and it might be more your speed.
I like flakes over all types of colors. One of my favorite flake combo is a flake polish (which kind) and Essie Playa Del Platinum.
I really don't like flakies at all. I have one bottle of CG Luxe and Lush but it's just not my thing. I have to say though, I love this mani. Sort of enough to want the Essie flakie and do this over a nuetral. Well done.
This is such a great flaky!!! I love it over neutrals.
I like flakies and the name sounds right to me LOL.
I prefer it over darker colors...I think you get more color change out of it. This combo you have on is gorgeous though. It looks like an opal!!
I actually tried to put a flakie on a light color today and it's totally a nail fail. Can't wait to get home and take it the hell off.
I don't like the orange flash either. >.< I bought HT when it first came out not realizing how orange it would flash (I think the florescents made it look more pink?). It doesn't look quite so bad over lighter blues and some purples, it kind of cools the orange. I bought 3 pastel Nfu Oh's thinking the pink and blue of 49 and 54 wouldn't flash orange or green, but they do, so no more flakies for me. Except Essie's AGAIG which I was surprised how much I like.
I really love how this turned out. I don't have a problem with how it leans to orange as orange is my fav colour!
As for what I prefer, I have only tried it over dark polish. But after seeing this. Let's just say that you have encouraged me to wear it over nude :D:D
