The Essie Wedding 2011 collection will be appearing in stores shortly, but I was just so excited to find two polishes that I really really love in this collection that I decided to share them now! Last year's wedding assortment left me cold, but this one has two gems in it - including *drumroll please* my PERFECT RED!
First up, Borrowed & Blue:
A real departure for Essie in terms of what they usually offer to the bridal set. I have to say, this is the first pale blue I've tried that didn't look horrific with my skin - it has a touch of periwinkle in there, and is paler than most baby blues on the market. Application was surprisingly non-chalky for a colour with so much white in the base, and I think it's just adorable and will look great all through summer! I absolutely love this one, and the name is cute to boot!
And here is First Dance:
Finally!! After all the searching (including my Hunt for Red by October), I found it. My perfect, classic red polish! First Dance is quite jelly-ish, but applies absolutely beautifully. I can't tell you how happy I am to find this - I will be getting back-ups for sure. The first coat appeared quite pink, but the overall colour of the polish is warmer, so it seems that there are both cool and warm pigments in it, giving it a great neutral balance on the nail. As I've learned, finding the perfect red can be really difficult, and now that I have, I don't want to ever be without it!
This collection also includes a sheer pink and a sheer peach - pretty, but definitely things I already have in my stash. I highly recommend both Borrowed & Blue and First Dance - both of them are complete winners in my book!

P.S. Stay tuned...I have a preview of some of the Essie Summer colours coming up!
I love both of these! I NEED Borrowed and Blue and am really curious about First Dance!
ReplyDeleteIs it so closed to Riva?
ReplyDeleteLove that Borrowed and Blue... Such a cute spring color!
ReplyDeleteOh Yeah! they'll be totally mine: a light blue and a jelly-ish red with cool tones, THAT'S ME!!!!
ReplyDeleteI really love Borrowed and Blue, it's calling my name and I have to have it. It looks so lovely on your gorgoeus nails k2k the red color is also perfect, but the baby blue is as you say, adorable and love it, love it. Maybe that's why I love weddings so much. The baby blue colors, LOL
ReplyDeleteLove,
Mc Huggs :)
@VV - Yes!! I think B&B is a total must have as well! :)
ReplyDelete@Zuzu - From what I've seen, B&B is much lighter than Riva and has more periwinkle tones - as well as no shimmer. I dont own it to do a swatch comparison though!
@Lydiane - Agreed!
@SakuraBlossom - Hehe this collection has your name on it then!!
@Geo58 - Hi again my friend! :) I think most people will find that this isn't really a "wedding-y" wedding collection, but I'm with you - baby blue totally reminds me of weddings! :) Glad you liked it!

They are both lovely, and so different from Essie's usual wedding offerings. I'm more excited for the summer collection, I think. I guess they're not doing a resort collection this year? I actually loved all of the colors from the 2010 resort collection - I bought the mini set plus a full sized back up of Playa del Platinum.
ReplyDelete@Grace - They are totally doing a Resort collection!! It's Africa-themed and I think I'm in for 3 of the 4. I loved last years Resort as well - lovely colour story, great formula, something for everyone. Really a perfect little collection. I don't have any of the new Resorts yet, but I'll be happy to share when I do! They are expected to be out May 1.

I am so pleased you finally found your perfect red, it is a beautiful shade and while I rarely wear red I think I may have to give this one a try.
ReplyDeleteI will definately be adding Borrowed & Blue to my Essie collection, it's so pretty!
Here in the UK on the website I buy my Essie's from is a mid-blue polish called Becky's Wish, I assume it's a charity thing but there is no info what-so-ever! It looks very similar to mesmerise which I don't have because I know I wouldn't wear it but am so curious about it!
You've totally made me want to paint my little nails red. Gosh, I love red.
ReplyDeleteActually some polishes that aren't sheer! Like these two for a wedding collection. The blue is really lovely.
ReplyDelete@Alison - Yay thank you!! I'm so relieved that I found *the one*. Oh and about Becky's Wish, I remember when that went on - it was the wish of a sick little girl. Here's a blog post about it: http://www.starvioletbeauty.com/2011/02/essie-beckys-wish-polish.html
ReplyDeleteI don't know if its the same as Mesmerize, but it looks quite similar - i'd be curious!
@Stephanie - I'm not that big into red polish, but sometimes I just get the craving and its the only thing that will make me happy!
@Lucy - I know right!? Sheer polishes have their place, especially in a wedding collex, but its nice to see some opaque choices. I think these are good wedding colours and *just* out of the box enough to make it interesting.

This shade of red looks so attractive. May I ask what other reds do you own? I'm looking for a perfect more blue based, bright red without any shimmer etc, but I'm afraid this one is a dupe of something I already own. I have Vodka&Caviar (medium red) Zoya Alix (blood red, similar to Essie Limited Addiction), Hey Sailor - very bright cheerful warm red & Comet Loves Cupid - classic bright red. I want to buy Zoya Sooki. What do you think? Is it different from the reds I mentioned?
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you - First Dance IS your red. It's positively PERFECT on you. It's not too orange, not a vampy red, not a hot beauty queen 'look at me everyone' red, not a blue red. I HAVE to look on eTailers to see if this shade might still be kicking around. I totally missed the Essie Wedding collection last year.
ReplyDelete@Robin Love...I have a ton of reds. Last 2 times I purged my stash which has been collecting on this one since the mid 80's, I really got rid of a ton, but NONE of my reds went unless I knew they were muddy, nasty and that was only a couple. I always return to my reds. Zoya Snookie is a fav of many folks. I personally think it has a little brown in it which makes it different than the ones you mentioned you own. I think this one would be a good red to add to your collection base on reds you have and wanting to round out - sounds like a cream red collection. This is just as described, the perfect mix of red, pink, blue, orange, but not too much of any of them to over-ride it coming out a great red that can work cool or warm. I have more than 60 reds at least and I know I don't have one that is exactly like this one.
