If your morning routine is anything like mine...

You probably aren't reading this blog. ;) Brush my hair? What? j/k

Hello everyone!

mKat* here with an introductory post. Like the others, I am very excited to become a part of this blogging community. As some of the girls have already mentioned, being a grad student is not without its complications. A female grad student who is interested in makeup and beauty tends to be looked upon as a walking contradiction. As a female grad student working in the joint fields of Environmental Studies and Geography who happens to love cosmetics however, I might as well confess that I'm a vegan who wants a sports car with leather seats. (I'm not vegan, by the way).

But more on that later...

The internet has the wonderful capacity to bring together people that might never have met and it was through it that I was able to find both these lovely women and, if I may say, one of the most brilliant reasons for blogging. Thanks, Google!

A brief academic background:
I graduated in 2006 with a double major in Urban Studies and Political Science and, shortly thereafter returned for a Masters degree in Environmental Geography. Since completing my Masters last year, I've been on a bit of a break, but I return to the books in the fall of 2009 for a PhD with a focus on Political Ecology. I know that grad school is a focus of this blog, but I'm sure you're here for the nails, so I'll spare you the details of my school life unless readers have specific questions. :) (Like Jess, I can probably rant about where I feel I fall in the feminist spectrum but I'll save you from that too! For now, anyway...)

Reference points:
  • Skintone/foundation: MAC NC43/NC 45 or MUFE 173
  • Favoured polish brand: China Glaze
  • Favoured colour(s): Electric blue, silver or gunmetal grey (just saying gunmetal grey sounds sexy!)
  • Favoured treatment(s): Organix Cosmetix cuticle oil and hand cream
  • Every day look: No polish (gasp!), buffed to a shine with a four-way buffer OR simple white french mani
  • Current stash: 30+ polishes (I have only been collecting for a year).
  • MUA: malaviKat
Pretty, shiny things!

It is my hope that my contribution to this blog will be the following:
  • a demonstration of my fun with Konad (see sidebar for coupon code) as I learn to get along with it and it with me
  • a discussion about "cruelty-free" beauty and "environmental friendly" nail products (or as cruelty-free as we can get)
  • nail tips, tricks and storage ideas
Stay tuned! :)

*mKat, in case you're wondering, is my lazy abbreviation of 'malaviKat', the screenname I am most commonly found under. It has nothing to do with med-school (as is often asked) as I'm pretty far from a natural science student at this point in my life.

Very interesting post. Glad to know something about you. What type of job will you be getting with those types of degrees? I will be eagerly awaiting your posts!

Thanks Lucy!

And that is the question to end all questions, isn't it? :) Just what do I want to be when I grow up?

To be honest, I enjoy teaching at the university level. I hear this diminishes over the course of a PhD, so you should check with me in four years. :) But for the time being, I can see myself happy as a professor. There are a lot of different kinds of jobs out there though, the least of which is government (cough cough) based policy research.

Ideally I think I'd eventually like to marry my environmental interests with my initial interest in finance and work as part of an investment team that deals specifically in SRI (socially responsible investing).
