(almost) Naked Nails!

My nails are getting to be that length where they start to get in the way of labwork and even more importantly - typing at 100wpm on my phone. Now no one in the polish world would call them long - they would probably be referred to as 'shorties', but I usually keep them a tad more nubbin-ish. I took off my polish (RBL Dead Calm was still going strong people...) with the intention of lopping off my nails, putting on a colour, and calling it a day. But when I removed my polish I felt a pang of remorse - they actually looked sort of even and, dare I say it - they looked kind of pretty naked! So I decided that I would enjoy them for a day or two more (as long as I can stand it!) in their naked glory. Now, I would feel indecent leaving the house without polish - as one might without clothes, so I put on a couple coats of OPI Coney Island Cotton Candy. It's like a good pair of Spanx - it smoothes everything out and helps you feel not too terribly naked and exposed. Please forgive my nudity:

Now I acknowledge that this would probably have looked better had I done a white French tip. Sorry, but I was just too lazy. This is only going to stay on for about a day anyways because I can already feel the length irritating me!!

I also wanted to share that this is an old, very well-loved bottle of OPI Coney Island Cotton Candy. You can tell by the picture that I'm almost halfway done with my bottle! It is a lovely sheer slightly peachy nude that is blissfully streak-free. I've seen newer bottles that look more pink. Mine is distinctly nude. If I want a pinker sheer I usually go for Essie Mademoiselle.

The only thing I don't really like about this polish is the old-school OPI brush. I know not everyone is a fan of the new OPI ProWide brush (I'm looking at you flinty!), but I definitely am. It is the perfect shape to fit the bottom of my nail and the thickness of it really works for me. I got my hands on some extra ProWide brushes and caps and re-fit my beloved Coney Island with a ProWide. Result - love it even more! Applies like a total dream!

Even though prancing around naked is kind of fun, I will probably be chopping these babies off soon and putting on something much less revealing! Maybe a red or pink to celebrate Valentine's. I might not be able to see the hubs for V-Day so maybe I'll wear something dark to indicate that I'm in mourning. But sexy mourning.

How long is too long for you? Do you ever rock the sheers?

kitty I like your "naked" nails... I actually left the house with naked mails... I mean NAKED!!! *gasp*
Although I only went to the supermarket down the street... I really did feel naked.
I hope you had a good weekend =P

I feel you on the naked nails thing. I've left the house maybe one time in the last ten years without polish on and my hands were balled up in fists the whole time I was out. My nails look ok without polish, but they just don't feel right!

Looks great on you! I like the analogy to Spanx. I'm growing out some stains, so I'm still kinda "eh" on wearing naked nails. But I'm starting to appreciate sheers more and more.

I'm the same way with length. I work with teeny tiny screws and tight spots, and if my nails go too far over my tips, I start having a lot of trouble doing my job! Also, if they get too long, I end up typing all weird. My tips hit the keys above the keys my pads are attempting to touch. Not ok!!

I also really like the look of sheer polishes, but I haven't yet found one I like that isn't streaky. Your naked-ish nails look very nice.

@Claudia - *gasp* you pranced around in the nude?! egads! (btw totally thought that said 'left the house with naked males'....go claudia!)

@Princess - Exactly - something about it just isnt right. Its like polish has become a part of my body and being without it isn't...natural.

@Glitterati - You'd be surprised what a layer of Essie Mademoiselle under another sheer can do to make those stains go away! I had some staining (nasty yellow staining) and it worked great!

@razberi - What do you do?? I sometimes have to deal with those awful screws when Im messing with my microscope. You described the typing dilemma perfectly!! and thanks :)

@D - spanx rule, no lie.

This looks soo amazing on you! You weren't kidding when you said your nails looked good naked! It doesn't even matter that you didn't do the french, they're so perfect they look french-ed! I wish my nails looked this good! Thanks for the sweet comment, I hope you are doing well! =)

I've developed a polish addiction in the past year and I can't remember the last time my nails have been naked since last spring. I've been really into the nude nails look and have been on the hunt for the perfect "skin tone" polish. I think I finally found it with Sephora by OPI Nonfat Soy Half Caff. It kind of makes my short stubby fingers look a bit elegant because the color looks like it's elongating my fingers.

your nails look great in "spanx" - totally elegant and sophisticated! my nails are naked when i'm too lazy to polish *gasp* ;o) but as i'm growing out nasty yellow stains (thanks, xmas-mani *grrr*), they have been nicely polished every single day since the holidays...
my toes are a completely different thing though, they have spent more time with color than without by now - they haven't been naked or even nude colored since i was about 15 or so...

I'm with you on the ProWide, it's amazing. It really adds the perfect touch for the application. Love it!

@kelsea - My nails are blushing! They are never this long so they never look this pretty...I know they aren't "long" but for me this is def. long. <3

@jeanie - I love nudes! My fav nude to elongate my fingers like you described is Essie Jazz. Love it! I will have to show you guys that one soon. I am going to have to check out that $OPI too!

@svennika - Thank you! I'm so with you on the toes - I dont think mine have gone unpolished since before the millenium. (Mostly due to the fact that pedis last forevverrrr!)

@laquermanic - I wish all polishes came with ProWide and I"m not ashamed to say it! :)

I like this color a lot! I tend to take breaks between polishing since I abhor yellow stains. I'm with you on my toes though, them babies are always polished til they get stains then they take a break. But they don't see the light of day unless they are polished. :D

Your nails look great naked!

@Arrianne - those pesky yellow stains! I've got to say I haven't had any since I've used either Orly Bonder or Barielle Hydrating Ridge Filler as a base, but they used to be a big problem for me! Hehe I'm the same way - no way can I wear sandals unless the tootsies are painted :)

@gildedangle - Thanks, friend!!

LOL - "since before the millenium" - yup, that's kind of what i was talking about when i wrote "since i was 15 or so"... i was 15 in the early 90s... ;o)

usually, my trusted (and cheap!) sally hansen base coat prevents those yellow stains we all love so much, but somehow my xmas-mani still managed to seep through... oh well, the golden sparkles were worth it...

Your nails are gorg! Don't ruin it with a painted white tip! Maybe just a little whitening pencil underneath? My nails are a similar shape to yours, and I keep them really short because I'm pretty clumsy and if they have too much free edge I'm sure to break them. I do love the sheers, but right now my nails are about half grown out of an unfortunate shade of yellowy yuckiness (I'm looking at you Zoya Suvi!). It was my first time using Zoya anchor as a base coat and I can honestly say NEVER AGAIN. I was horrified when I took off my polish. Anyhoo... once the grossness grows out I will certainly be wearing my sheers again.

I work at a retail optical chain as a sales and optical tech ... fun stuff. The screws for glasses are TEEEEENY. Oh, and it's really fun to grind my nails accidentally on the diamond wheel. LOL! Thankfully I don't have to monkey with the lensometer or edgers anymore (lots more nail killing with those!).

@svennika - So glad you found a basecoat that works for you! Some stains really are inevitable though!

@Grace - Thanks!!! Ugh youve been a victim of the yellow ickiness too?! Gross. Its always amazing to me how some base coats work for some people and then totally destroy other peoples nails - I really didnt think we were that different!

@razberi - ahhhhh glasses screws!! those teeny tiny buggers!! must rip up your nails like mad..sheesh diamond wheels!? your job may even be more nail-destroying than mine!!
