Today is my birthday. Another year older. I hate birthdays. I always have.
Example. When I turned 4 I had a birthday party. My parents brought in a cake and I blew out the candles - and promptly burst into tears. My mother asks, "What's wrong schnuckiputz??" and I wail in the response "I'M ONE YEAR CLOSER TO DYING!!!". That's when the video recording stops.
Another example. My 9th birthday I had a meltdown because I was "one year away from double digits". I'm pretty sure my parents had no idea what to do with me.
Every year now I have a mental breakdown on the day of my birth. I am just not good with getting older. But for all the anxiety it causes, I think I handle it pretty well. I have my one day of depressive emo morbidity, and then I get over it. So to "celebrate", I'm wearing black. Essie Licorice.

Me, too! In preparation for my 27th birthday last month, I read childhood diary entries from birthdays past. Every year I was having a fight with a friend, had a broken heart, was anxious or disappointed in some cosmic sense. I'd much rather celebrate someone else's birthday than my own. For you, I'm wearing a cheerful hot blue polish today (though I think Licorice is rad in that emo celebratory way.) Happy birthday!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday (:
ReplyDeleteHapp0y Birthday! Don't get too down - life's pretty good really! My girlfriend said the other day that her son (age 14 now) always has a tantrum the night before his birthday - funny thing birthdays!
ReplyDeleteThat liquorice looks good enough to eat by the way!
Today is my oldest child's birthday, too! I love my own birthdays, but I mourn my children getting older. I miss having babies! Noah is turning 13 today. Have a fantastic day, kittytokaren!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! And thanks for representing the short nail girls. It's so nice to see a blog that shows what a great palette short nails can be, too!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday, and many more to come! So you're a little older than you were yesterday... At least your nails are fabulous!
ReplyDeleteAwww. At least your nails look hot in black.
ReplyDeleteAlso: You posted the 1,000th post on the blog. :)
It is oh so beautiful though! Happy Birthday, anyway.
ReplyDeletekittytokaren, a favor: Think of the alternative to not having any more birthdays. You wouldn't be here and we wouldn't be enjoying your fun posts. Have a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteEven though you don't like the fact it's your birthday: congratulations! I am totally the other way around: I'm very annoying when my birthday is coming up.
ReplyDeletehappy birthday! love your nails!
ReplyDeleteI love black nail polish:p its soo elegant:P
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! I've never tried Essie Licorice but it looks so awesome on your nails I think I will have to. I have loads of blacks already!
ReplyDeleteI am going through an emo nail phase too! This week I have sported OPI Unripened, Ink and Royal Rajah Ruby and I have just painted my nails with Chanel Black Pearl. I think dark polishes always look chic and elegant on short nails like yours.
Don't get too down. Your nails are looking fierce as hell.
ReplyDeleteI also don't like my birthday, I pretend it's just a day like any other. Your nails look great. Oh, and still you get a happy birthday, even if you don't like it ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy B-Day !!! At least you can tell yourself you've got a gorgeous mani ;)
ReplyDeleteAwww, well Happy Birthday anyway! Your nails look completely fabulous (as always)! :-D
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday babes!
ReplyDeleteA mid-life crisis at 9, that's a new one. But I feel ya :(
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Kitty! and yay for 1,000 collective posts! I had a meltdown on my birthday at age 9 for the same reason. Then another one at 10, 12, 13, then 16. I just didn't want to grow up and lose my innocence. But now I enjoy all my years in the school of life. Plus, you European women age with so much grace. I want to be just like Catherine Deneuve!
ReplyDeleteHope you had a great day!
ReplyDeleteBless your heart! I have a friend that always gets depressed on her birthdays because on the day she was born, her mother said *I wanted a boy - take her back!* and they told this story on every one of her birthdays!
ReplyDeleteYour nails look great!
xoxo-Marsha
Thank you to all of you!!!!
ReplyDeleteI was working all day on my birthday (until 2am - yuck) but seeing all of these lovely messages that were left for me has really touched my heart!!! :)
My one wish is that I could meet all of you in person and give you a big HUG!

I understand that anxiety, I do. But as someone said, the alternative is even worse and I guess that's why I have a problem with my birthdays. It started when I turned 20. :/
ReplyDeleteI still hope you had a good day. :)
Hugs!
I'm so sorry you feel like that. I don't like them anymore. When your my age things arent' looking up! I always enjoyed my birthdays when I was growing up and having parties thrown for me. No more parties : o(. Happy Belated Birthday. (((hugs)))
ReplyDeleteHey, when you wake up every morning you're only one day older, only one day...even on your birthday. So just go for the cake and the party and don't worry about one day.
