Tip-Toeing Out of My Comfort Zone: OPI DS Design

For those of you who cannot keep all of us PoP girls straight, I'm the super-pale one who wears a lot of Essie sheers and 'boring' colours and talks about feeling 'elegant' a lot. So I'm hoping you all can appreciate my dive into foreign waters today with a holo!

This is neither my first holo, nor my first OPI Designer Series polish. However, it is going to be the first one I keep! I was looking for a nude holo before and tried DS Classic but that looked too yellow against my skin. (Me being so pale if there's even a hint of a whiff of an undertone in something it shows up on me like magic marker on a freshly painted white wall.) But I believe I found my perfect nude holo!

Here she is, OPI DS Design (Excuse the tip wear - that's what happens when you apply SV to dry polish...tsk, tsk!):

Stepping out of one's comfort zone can be quite dangerous. I know this because I was recently attacked by a rapid possum while I had one foot safely in my apartment and one foot on my door mat. I'm viewing this as a similar trial. One foot safely in my colour house, and one foot on the doormat of crazy rainbow sparkle!

I know, I know. It's typical of me - if I'm going to go holo it's of course going to be a nude right? (*yawn*) I am who I am and I love nudes and classic colours, and am not typically one for super blingy polish with glitter and holo and duo, oh my! That being said I'm quite liking this. I put DS Design over an opaque baby pink in this pic, but it doesn't alter the colour whatsoever. (Trust me I compared them side by side, it's just that DS Design alone takes 4 coats to be opaque....I used two here.) I love that the nude is slighty darker than my skin, but not distinctly yellower or pinker. I think the colour really works! As for the holo....sh'pow! That is full-on holo rainbow sparkle to me! I don't think I'm yet ready to handle holos in bright, funky colours, and I'm not even sure that I feel completely comfortable with this yet, but so far so good.

I have my thesis proposal defense coming up and its going completely dismally. I am really not happy with things at all and I'm trying to fight through a deep, black, depression to get the work done and I'm not doing so hot. So I figured, now is a good a time as any to shake things up and try to get me out of my funk! (I'm also tip-toeing out of my comfort zone in another way - I've recently expanded my brand-snobbery to include Zoyas! More on that later...)

Baby steps, people! By stepping out the door I could find a whole new world of polish...or get bitten by another rapid possum. We shall see.

What do you think of holographic polishes? What do you think of this one on me? Which should I try next?

Oh, watch out for the possums- they're fierce!
That polish is AWESOME on you. Just beautiful.
Maybe one day you'll have a bold attack and you'll try a pale color holo polish in blue, lavender, or green! (think Milani or China Glaze) They are still pastel enough to be as subtle as a holo can be, but they are exceptionally lovely on. The way you'd imagine the inside of a cloud would look.
Anyway, congratulations on busting out of the tried and true.
This really looks nice on you.

You have such good taste! I am not the biggest fan of holos. I have DS Desire and I really dislike it, but I like the idea of a nude holo that matches one's skin tone. This one suits you well.

: )

@ReaderRita - I had no idea that possums were so mean but sheesh!!! Vicious creature....And thank you for the support in my new polish adventure! I've been in a sheer Essie daze for the past couple months and I'm starting to crave different colours so my posts will be a little more adventurous for a while I believe :) And thanks for the rec! Maybe DS Diamond? It looks kinda light purple?

@aaminahsmom - I don't buy from e-tailers so I'm not freaking out :) I think what OPI is doing is terrible. They need to make a colour like OPI Suzi Says No More Soup For You!

@faerieberry - Aww thank you! I'm not a big holo gal myself - I feel like a holo is kind of like the rules of baring skin in clothes. You can either show off your chest or your legs but not both...in the np world its like experiment with colour or finish, not both. That's at least how it works for me. I've seen tons of gals pull off crazy NP that would look ridic on me, but they look like fashionistas doing it. I really am just not cool enough!

I adore this polish on you! Were you really attacked by a rabid possum?!

Holo polishes are my faves, Milani have a pink one that is more subtle than the usual holos, maybe you'd enjoy that?

@Rebecca - I was indeed attacked by a rapid possum. It was awful. My relationship with possums has always been a complicated one, but now it is just hate. And thanks for the polish rec!

Hey- this is holo-tastic AND elegant! Lovely.

This one looks lovely on you. I have not tried a holo yet.

Holos are great except in application when they are frequently PITA.
Chainmail Charm is my fave. By Diamond. That's subtle.
I have other holos. Nubar Reclaim is a nice polish but I either go too fast or too slowly and often mess it up. Or add TC too soon or too late. Whatever!
I can't advise you on elegant polishes. I do wear nudes but only on one hand. The other hand has to then be more in-yer-face.
Er, Hansen Magical range? Fairydust Pink? Or a holo topcoat like CG do. Can't remember the name. Is it Wireless?

@Erudio Ergo Sum - Thank you! I like to think this is a little bit of crazy and elegant!

@Lolitadewdrop - Thank you - I have not experimented much with holos either. I'm still not sure how I feel about it honestly!

@jaljen - This one (maybe its because it was OPI DS?) was super easy to apply...a little sheer, but really easy and covered up every flaw. Thanks for the recs!

I really like this on you, it's subtle yet a touch more edgy. I actually don't own a holo, I have a couple of glitters but they are never on my nails long before I feel the need to remove them. At the moment I am wearing Essie Lapis of Luxury which is a beautiful colour that I like with my uber pale skintone but have only had it on a couple of hours and I want to go back into my sheer pink comfort zone! I am resisting the urge now but know I will probably take it all off tomorrow and do a fresh coat of Mademoiselle!

I'm sorry to hear you're going through a hard time, I felt exactly the same with my masters dissertation, everytime I sat down to do some I just couldn't face it. But with a little perserverance and pushing myself to just do a bit I found I would work longer than I intended. Fooling myself into writing worked a treat every-time! Also when I really felt like it was too much I would go for a nice walk in the fresh air, it would really help blow out the cobwebs so I could start afresh, it certainly beat staring at it doing nothing for an hour!

Good Luck, I'm sure you'll find your mojo again soon :)

@Alison - Thank you my friend for your kind words of support. I'm really really freaking out. I honestly don't want to do this anymore and I'm having to fight everyone every step of the way to even do it. I wish I liked what I did. I think I will be pulling an all-nighter tonight trying to get this thing together!!!

I love this polish on you - it has just a hint of wildness that will keep people guessing. :)

You should try China Glaze Spin me Round - it's along the same lines as this, like a holo sparkle beige. It's neutral but holo at the same time, and I think it was opaque in 2-3 coats. Part of the Kaleidoscope collection.

I love the DS series, and this one is no less a fav! I have not been as pleased with the latest two new ones, but I digress, atleast I have the older ones to keep me company :)

@Laura - thank you!! and you're right I think it does keep people guessing....and i do have a wild side...somewhere deep deep down there...

@chickadee1066 - thanks for the rec, but China Glaze and I are not friends. Sworn enemies!!

@Bunny Masseuse - I am loving the DS series! (But I hate to say I think my favs are the latest two...im not that into holos yet! :P) I'm glad to hear this is a fav!
