Trend-cum-Classic: Sephora by OPI Metro Chic

My life has been pretty hectic as of late. Family issues are ruling my life, and I spend every waking minute that I'm not in lab dealing with them. Lab isn't going all that great either, and my apartment is a complete disaster. Even though it is summer and 'pastel weather' (about 90ºF and humid here!) I needed a sort of Heimkehr - a return to home, to feel like myself again.

So I put on a polish that I wear a lot, but for some reason have never shown you. I think it is because I wear it when I'm super busy/flustered and don't have the time/energy/patience/awareness to snap pictures. I only own back-ups of two polishes (Essie Tennis Corset and OPI DS Glow) but I consider this baby totally back-up worthy! You can't tell from the pictures, but I'm definitely going to need another bottle soon.

Sephora by OPI ($OPI) Metro Chic - a colour that was super trendy a couple years ago but has proved its staying power and become a total classic in my opinion. I know this one has been reviewed to death, but here it is on me:

I took a couple pictures because the colour of this is hard to accurately capture - it's a dusty, milky, silky, smokey ermine colour with purple tones. Basically, grey + brown + purple = Metro Chic. It sounds bizarre, but on the nail it is just super chic and elegant, and whenever I put this on I think "Why on earth do I wear anything else?!" - truly the sign of a great polish!

The one tick I would put in the 'con' column for Metro Chic is that is a Sephora by OPI polish - not that I dislike the polish itself - I just hate hate hate that long skinny brush!! However, I made a HUGE discovery - the OPI ProWide brush fits in the $OPI cap! I ripped out that awful brush, stuck a ProWide in there, and now my absolute favourite brush is now in what might be my absolute favourite polish!!!! It improved application tremendously, and I did two easy coats - in the dark, I might add - and I think it turned out great.

Is there a colour you go back to again and again? Do you think taupe colours have become classic or would you still put them in the trend zone?

I hope taupe will be a classic. I love You Don't Know Jacques and will wear it until it runs out! Love Metro Chic on you.

I like this one! For some reason I always go back to OPI Miami Beet and Essie Mint Apple Candy! I love those two sooo much! I hope you feel better soon! Try and take a few days off for yourself to recharge... I need that as well...

Some of these taupes just don't look good on me, from time to time I'll do OPI Sand in my Suit but Get me to the Moon is my all time love for grey/lilacs.

I also have this and I love it too, together with OPI's You don't know Jacques! and my new favourite Essie's Playa del Platinum and Demure Vixen. I have to say, Metro Chic looks much better on you than on me :)

I feel the same way about Sally Hansen's Commander and Chic. This is the second time in a row that i've put it on for my work polish (and i never do that). I'm thinging of getting a back up for it. How similiar is CIC to Metro Chic? Can you please do a comparison?

I love love love this color! It looks so blah in the bottle, but whenever I wear it I cannot stop looking at my nails. I love how grey/taupe it looks in some lights, and how lavender it looks in others. I love that I can feel chic and yet office appropriate at the same time. It DOES require three coats for me, but I'm willing to do it because when I put this on, I usually leave it for the whole week. (Does anybody else do that? Like, if it's a crazy polish I can only wear for a weekend, I will not put up with a tricky/slow application, but somehow if I can get a lot of wear out of it, it's not so bad.)

I just bought a backup, or I guess not so much a backup, but a full size bottle of Essie Playa del Platinum. I already have the mini and for me it's like the summer version of Metro Chic. A totally office appropriate "greige" that still feels light enough to be summery but off-beat enough to be on trend. I almost didn't buy it because I already have Body Language. They're close, but in the end, not close enough. I needed Playa del Platinum, as well!

Oh, I meant to add, Metro Chic is a WAY more interesting color than OPI You Don't Know Jacques! I almost didn't buy it at first because I figured "they're different, but they sort of serve the same purpose - brown/grey/beige, work appropriate, etc" but since I bought Metro Chic, I haven't touched my bottle of YDKJ!

AND (almost done, I swear) @KittytoKaren - I picked up Demure Vixen after seeing your swatch and wore it all last week! Another great "under the radar" cool polish.

I really like this on you! It is really elegant, I think most Taupe colours are. I only have Chanel Particuliere but I love it! Another colour thats more purple and dusty is OPI Parlez Vous OPI? I love that one too, also a very classy and elegant colour IMO.

I had been on a black kick lately (Heavily influeced by seeing 30 Seconds to Mars a week ago) do you like Black polishes?

This goes so nice with your skin tone. I have Orly Prince Charming and it reminds me of that. I always put it on when I don't know what to wear and I always love it.

I have THE SAME relationship with this color as you. I go back to it always, and never tire of it. It's still my favorite of all the taupes and dusty greyed shades that have come out, and I've tried nearly all of them.

Polish or Perish is one of my top 3 favorite nail blogs, and I love this post. Taupe colors are totally classy. I always feel pretty and pulled together when I wear them. They happen to flatter my skin tone, too.

I feel the same way about this color. I just love it!! A few months ago, I was using some of my untrieds, and none of them seemed to work on me. I was frustrated, so I put Metro Chic on, and I felt so much better!! This is like 'Chicken Soup for the Nails'!!

Hi everyone!! Sorry I was out of the country for a while at a funeral (I sported Essie Demure Vixen by the way...was perfect for the occasion and someone even commented that it was a perfect neutral that was a little bit quirky) and I really missed reading everyones blogs and seeing people's comments....so here goes!!

@Faith J - I hope so too! I think YDKJ is already a classic...

@tasha - Yes! Those are gorg - make your own classics :) I do need some time to recharge, but alas, work calls.

@Bunny Masseuse - Ahh! Get Me to the Moon is one I'm still hoping to find and try! It always looks so gorgeous!

@Nailspotting - Wearing DV right now - adore it!!! To each her own colour - Playa del Platinum looks like le caca on me :(

@Kendra - Unfortunately I don't have CiC to do a comparison for you - why? Because I saw pics of CiC and it was *soooo* close to Metro Chic on the nail that I didn't need it :) In my opinion they're so similar that you only need one - and I'm picky.

@Grace - Exactly!!! It looks like sludge in the bottle and its always such a surprise to see how great it looks on! I really struggled with the application on Metro Chic until I replaced the brush with the ProWide. Now it rules an I think I'll be wearing it even more - I was doing the same thing and saved it for when I was going to wear it for a long time!! Body Language works so much better for me than Playa del Platinum...I don't know why PdP looks so awful on me!!! So many of you seem to love it!

@Spaceinvaders - Glad you do!! :) Thank :)

@Alison - Ahh Particuliere is my other top taupe!! Great minds...I love PVO as well but definitely feel like that is a 'purple'...still one of those fab dusty colour that I can't get enough of! 30STM go you on the black kick eh??? I used to not be into black polish...until I tried Chanel Noir Ceramic. Then it was total love. I did a post of it on here a while back :) I also have OPI Black Onyx but I've only been brave enough to wear it under other polishes. But seriously adore Noir Ceramic. Sexy, tough, but chic!

@Tilly - Why thank you! I think so do! And Prince Charming is such a fan fav!! Its another one in the same family and I hope they stick around forever!

@osnyder - YES! Another MC lover!! I gave up my YDKJ because I'd never wear it over this. Metro Chic is just love. I need a back-up really.

@markjoy - Wow thank you so much!! What an incredible compliment :) I feel the same way about taupes - 'pretty and pulled together' is the perfect way to say it!

@chickadee - Awww good! I go through those times rarely where nothing looks quite right and I get so frustated!! MC always works :) Chicken Soup indeed...

@Audrey - *HUGS* yeah girl lets keep the trend alive!!! And thanks :)

I think the $OPI bottles are weird. They look like some kind of anal sex toy...haha!

I wore my Chanel Black Velvet when I met 30STM, it was perfect! Thanks to you! When I removed that I wore OPI Baby It's Coal Outside which I love! I also have Noir Ceramic which is beautiful but I need to remember to add some thinner 'cause it's gone a bit thick and difficult to work with. I also have the US version of Black Satin (with shimmer) and keep meaning to get the non-shimmer Europe verison too!

I've gone back to my sheers now though, probably until December when I go see Jared and the boys again! Can't wait!

Hope your thesis is going well, if you need anyone to vent to, just drop me a line!

Take Care x

I love this color on you. On me, the lilac undertones do not look good. I recently got Rimmel's Steel Grey and it suits my skin tone much better. For those of you who don't like the lilac undertone of Metro Chic, Rimel's Steel Grey is an excellent alternative, imo.
