OPI Swiss: Swatches & Comps (my picks!)

Admittedly, I went a little overboard. Initially I was only going to get Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous (*hate* that name...) from the OPI Swiss Collection, but then I wanted the gold because I love gold polishes, and the green would be unique to me, and the cremes were so pretty and and and....Result? I ended up placing my first (and last!! I swear!!) order from Transdesign. I'm usually a "buy one bottle at a time" kinda gal, which renders e-tailers useless as shipping charges are too high to justify. Plus, I like seeing them in person first. :)

The upside - I'm going to swatch all of the ones I chose for you, and do some comps that I myself was curious about. Let's get down to business!

Bottle shots! L-R: Glitzerland, Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous, Ski Teal We Drop, Cuckoo For This Color, William Tell Me About OPI

Glitzerland - compared with Dazzled by Gold (middle), I Get A Kick Out of Gold! (index)

Glitzerland is the least 'gold' out of all three - it's more gold than it appears in these pics though, just because its next to such yellow gold polishes - it is a very wearable champagne hue, but has a very similar finish to I Get A Kick Out of Gold! - a finish I love! If IGAKOoG (rightttt...) is too yellow for you, which I believe it is for me, Glitzerland might be up your alley. But for those of you hoping to get rid of your Dazzled by Gold lemming with this - to me it's not even close. DbG is something else entirely.

Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous - compared with Brand New Skates (middle)

I think OPI knocked this one out of the park!!! It's moody, sparkly, almost-foi,l, cool-toned pewter shade. In the bottle you can see a titch of green pigment, but on the nail it just comes across as rich. I don't even know what to say besides I love it. Compared to BNS, it is much more sparkly and has a different finish than BNS, which is more of a 'regular' shimmer. BNS is also more blue-toned. Despite it's truly asinine name, Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous is my favourite of this collection!

Ski Teal We Drop - compared to RBL Teal (middle)

I expected these to be a lot different than they actually are. In the bottle (and swatched on tape), the OPI looks decidedly lighter, but on the nail (well my nail at least - maybe my nailbeds are a weird colour?), I can't tell the difference! Only a discerning eye would catch that RBL Teal is a hair darker and a hair greener than OPI Ski Teal We Drop. Beautiful cream formula, but a 2-coater to RBL's 1.

Cuckoo For This Color

No comps for this as I have nothing like it in my collection! It is a lot greener and more vibrant than I expected - some how I expected this to be an almost-black with teal/green shimmer. The base is certainly green, and the whole package comes off slightly teal-ish. This might be too green for me? I'm not sure about it...

William Tell Me About OPI

This one I am sure about. William Tell Me About OPI is a ridiculously shiny, delicious, deep eggplant. It is everything I wanted Lincoln Park After Dark to be (and it wasn't...)! Certainly dries darker than the bottle shade, but it is truly luscious!

I think my must-haves of the bunch for me are Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous (as I predicted) and William Tell Me About OPI (I can't resist a good vampy - and this one is *really* good). What are your picks from the Swiss collection? From what I've heard, people either love this collection or don't care for even a one - what's your stance? Are you looking forward to any upcoming collections?

Aha! You've succumbed to the lure of the e-tailer! :) I hope you have more willpower than I did. "Oh, I'll just place one order to get my collection started. I mean... I don't really need 12 shades of pink..." *cough cough*

:)

Ski Teal We Drop is absolutely gorgeous. Really flattering on you, too. So is William Tell Me About OPI. (From here it looks almost wine-burgandy in colour.) Either way, it's stunning.

You always pick such lovely polishes! (And I swear... you're going to have me buying OPIs soon.) GRRR...

Super pretty! I can see how it was hard to resist! I've heard a bunch of people compare William Tell Me About OPI to Lincoln Park After Dark, so I may have to check that one out, too!

I expected them to be better.. I prefered them in the promotional pics. On the nail they seem quite usual, no "must have" ones. Is it my only opinion??
But your nails are so beautiful! I'm jalous!

Wow, from the bottle pics I expected Ski Teal We Drop to be more like Color Club Gossip Column, but it's way darker. I think I might need it. I don't have RBL Teal and the OPI is definitely a less expensive option, but... the RBL formula is just so perfect. What do you think? Is it worth the extra $10 for RBL or should I go with the OPI? (I can get either one in person, so shipping isn't an issue.)

How many coats was William Tell? I don't have any problem with "almost black" polishes (ahem...LPAD), but I could use a vampy that actually stays bottle color after more than one coat.

Glitzerland is pretty, but I'm hoping the champagne foil from the Vintage Vixen line that I just ordered will satisfy that craving...

@mKat - Ahhh!! I think I can escape the e-tailer thing. I feel a bit silly about this one, because I'm only keeping three of the five I bought and that wouldn't be worth the shipping. So my etailer foray is done. Also helps that I'm not into any of the upcoming collections! WTMAO is more purple in some lights, more red in others - I think of it as aubergine, but others might have different interpretations :)

@Aurora - I don't have LPAD to compared to William Tell unfortunately! But I used to have it and I didn't like it because it was sooo black on me. I like WTMAO a lot better.

@Theailamenta - They really aren't super unique - we've seen all the finishes and colours before, but I don't have certain combos in my collection. You're definitely not alone :)

@Grace - Well out of the two teals, I'm keeping my RBL Teal, but in reality its probably not worth the extra $10. The OPI applied great!!! Like really great - the RBL is only slightly more pigmented. If I didn't already have the RBL and I was choosing, I'd go with the OPI. William Tell was 2 coats and I like it a lot better than I liked LPAD (I liked it so little I swapped it away so I couldn't compare!). It definitely dries darker than the bottle though. Glitzerland is one that I'm keeping - but if you're getting Swing Baby (I think thats it?) from ChG you might not be so into it. I love Glitzerland though - I have a feeling I'll be wearing it alot. It's a much more wearable gold for every day than DbG.

Thanks! That's really helpful. I'll just pick up Ski Teal We Drop, then. I love RBL, but good lord, it is hart to part with $18 for one bottle. Maybe I'll get a few during the next 50% off sale, whenever it is.

BTW - Ji said on her facebook page they're discontinuing Concrete Jungle. Lucky you nabbed it!

@Kitty: Sensible. :) I didn't really have anything before I started blogging (I own a lot more makeup than I do polish) so I found etailers made sense. Plus you can't really buy China Glaze all that easily in Canada. They're at Sallys but that's about it. I agree wholeheartedly with you though... it would not be worth shipping for a few bottles of polish.

mKat said...

PS. Ski Teal We Drop is soooo pretty! Why would you part with it?!

jaljen said...

Just not interested in these.

@Grace - I can't believe she'd DCing CJ! :(

@mKat - If I move back to Europe, eBay and etailers is going to be where its at for sure! But the way I buy polish now, it just seems silly! I have RBL Teal, which I like better than Ski, so I kept the RBL instead :)

@jaljen - To each her own.

I still want Glitzerland...Even though I still haven't found a light gold that looks good on me. Maybe I'll get I Get A Kick Out of Gold too. I like the dark red, William Tell Me About Opi, and the teal. I don't care about coat amount if I don't have to buy a $18 dollar polish...

Awesome comparisons! I love your swatches, they make the colors look SO good. There's a few I want from this collection, maybe two or three?

Justine said...

Thank you for the helpful comparisons!

You bought almost exactly my wishlist for the OPI Swiss collection. :) The only one I don't want is Cuckoo For This Color.

Sandi said...

I think Cuckoo looks great on you, not too green at all.

@Apple Juice - Ski is really gorgeous! I love cremes!!!

@Hoochie - Those are my two favs as well!! I only kept those and Glitzerland :)

@OHMYPOLISH - Great minds think alike ;)

@Kara - Glizterland is one I kept - I really like it. It looks so 'not gold' in this pic just because its next to two very yellow gold polishes. Its beautiful and very neutral. I find I Get A Kick to be too yellow for me. The app of Ski Teal We Drop is soooo good - save your money! Get the OPI!

@Jana - Thank you so much that is so nice to hear!!

@Justine - You're welcome! I'm not really digging Cuckoo either....

@Sandi - Thanks :) I parted with her anyways and sent her off to a better home!

I really like Glitzerland and William Tell Me About OPI...they all look great, though! The only one out of the collection that I don't want is Cuckoo For This Color.

Hm, is it sad that I see Teal & Ski as two different colors (maybe it's my artistic background)? I think of nail colors the way I do art medium; darker hues for shadows and lighter ones for highlights.

*If you don't understand artist babble, do not read further because you'll probably get confused* Ski is definitely a highlight color for a really blackened blue-green crayon ball; I'd say teal, but teal for me is NOT RBL Teal. It's lighter in my brain, like what you would see on the Wiki page for the color. RBL Teal (they should have named it Blue-Green because if you imagine the Crayola blue-green crayon, that crayon is exactly the same color as RBL Teal) is a shade you'd use to contour a shadow on the ball. *Artist babble ends here*

I definitely have to get Ski Teal We Drop & Cuckoo for this Color.

Darn, I ordered Ski and I have the RBL Teal. I could've bought something else. I don't have Brand New Skates and much prefer Lucerne. Oh some of these names drive me batty! I also put in a large order to TransDesign. Just waiting for it to come. William is just gorgeous. Now I wished I had ordered it!

kittytokaren: Knowing how much you like golds, you might want to check out Orly Glitz & Glamour from the Holiday 2010 collection. I'd love to see a side-by-side comparison with Dazzled by Gold.

Yeah, I'm still lemming Dazzled by Gold. *sheepish look*

this is not a joke said...

I bought Ski Teal you Drop three weeks ago and it has been on my nails for three weeks.

I am obsessed.
